Following a recent storm, we were called out by a property management company to attend an urgent tree failure at a rented property in Wythenshawe, South Manchester. A Willow tree with codominant stems had partially failed — one large stem had split away and collapsed onto the roof of the house.
This was treated as an emergency call-out to prevent further damage and ensure tenant safety.
Initial Emergency Response
When we arrived on site, it was clear that a major stem had failed, tearing away from the main structure and landing on the roof. Fortunately, no one had been injured, but the risk of further damage was high, and access to the property was affected.
We quickly assessed the situation and began the following steps:
Secured the area using barriers and safety signage
Set up a safe access route for tenants and neighbours
Dismantled and removed the failed Willow stem in sections using rope access and rigging
Cleared all debris from the roof and garden to prevent secondary damage
Thanks to a prompt call from the management company, we were able to mobilise and respond the same day, removing the failed section and making the site safe within a few hours.
Follow-Up Inspection and Full Tree Removal
After the initial emergency works, we returned for a full inspection of the remaining tree structure. Our findings included:
A heavily unbalanced canopy, with all remaining weight distributed to one side
Signs of root plate movement and lift at the base, indicating instability
A compromised union where the original stem had split — making future failure likely
Due to these factors, we advised the client that the entire tree needed to be removed to eliminate ongoing risk to the property and its occupants.
Full Removal of the Willow Tree
We scheduled the removal for a follow-up visit with a full team and appropriate equipment. The process included:
Sectional dismantling of the remaining tree using rope access
Controlled rigging and lowering to avoid damage to fences, gardens, and buildings
Processing and removal of all timber and brash from the site
Leaving the area clean, clear, and safe for continued occupancy and property repairs
The property management company and tenants were kept fully informed throughout both visits, and all work was carried out to BS3998:2010 (Tree Work – Recommendations).
Outcome
✅ Emergency stem removal carried out same day
✅ Full tree removal completed on follow-up visit
✅ Area left safe and tidy for tenants and trades
✅ Ongoing risk to property and occupants eliminated
The client was pleased with our fast response, professional handling of the emergency, and clear advice throughout the process.
