Dual-Stem Birch Tree Removal & Stump Grinding – Didsbury, Manchester

We were recently asked to carry out the removal of a dual-stem Silver Birch tree at a residential property in Didsbury, South Manchester. The tree was located at the rear of the property and backed directly onto a McDonald’s car park, including a disabled parking bay just metres away.

The removal was commissioned to make space for a planned house extension, and our brief included full removal of the tree and stump grinding to below ground level so that building work could proceed without obstruction.

Site Constraints and Risk Management

This job came with a few more logistical considerations than a typical garden removal:

  • The rear fence line bordered a busy commercial car park with regular pedestrian and vehicle traffic

  • A disabled parking bay sat directly behind the tree, requiring extra care and clear communication with neighbouring businesses

  • There was limited space to work, with access via a residential driveway

We carried out a site-specific risk assessment and set up appropriate cones, barriers, and safety signage to create a safe working zone. Clear sightlines were established for pedestrians, and our ground team actively managed public interface throughout the job.

Tree Removal

The Birch had two main stems, both reaching around 5 metres in height. The tree was in reasonable condition, but due to its proximity to the house and the proposed extension, removal was the only practical option.

Using rope access, we dismantled the tree in sections:

  • Each limb was carefully lowered into the garden to avoid debris falling into the car park

  • Our climber made controlled cuts using freefall techniques to direct branches away from boundaries

  • Ground crew processed the material as we went, ensuring the site remained clear and safe at all times.

Stump Grinding

With the Birch removed, the next stage was stump grinding.

We used a tracked stump grinder to:

  • Grind both stems and the connected root plate well below ground level

  • Avoid disturbance to the boundary fence and protect the neighbouring car park during grinding

The work was completed without issue, and the client was left with a clean, level site ready for the next phase of their project.

Outcome

This job was completed in a morning, with full removal and stump grinding finished safely and efficiently. The site was left tidy, and there was no disruption to the operations of the neighbouring business.

The client now has a clear front boundary with no obstruction to planned building works, and neighbours were appreciative of the care taken to manage access and noise during the removal.
