We were recently contacted by Bramhall High School to carry out the removal of a mature Silver Birch located near a main pupil walkway on the school site. While the tree had been part of the landscape for many years, it had unfortunately become a hazard — and the school made the decision to remove it on safety grounds.
Why the Tree Needed Removing
The Silver Birch had been condemned due to root-related damage. Over time, the roots had begun to lift and displace several paving slabs, creating an uneven surface and a serious trip hazard — especially for students moving quickly between buildings during class changes.
Following a formal assessment and in consultation with the school’s site team, it was agreed that removal was the most appropriate option. Repairs to the paving would only be possible once the tree and its invasive root system were taken out.
Planning and Site Safety
As with all school-based work, safety and minimising disruption were key priorities.
Before any cutting began, we:
Cordoned off the area to create a secure working zone
Briefed our team on site safeguarding protocols
Managed foot traffic from late-arriving pupils and local dog walkers passing through the grounds
Scheduled the work to avoid lesson changeovers and busy periods as much as possible
The job required careful coordination, not just from a safety point of view, but also in terms of keeping noise to a minimum during teaching hours.
Tools and Techniques
To reduce noise and disruption:
We used electric chainsaws to carry out the dismantling quietly and efficiently
Chipping was limited to break and lunchtime windows, when outdoor noise was less likely to interfere with classroom learning
The tree was dismantled in sections, with branches and timber safely lowered and processed on site. There were no overhead cables or access issues, so the work proceeded smoothly and on schedule.
All material was removed the same day and the area was left safe and tidy for students and staff.
Outcome
The removal was completed quickly and professionally, with zero disruption to lessons and full cooperation with the school’s site team.
By the end of the day:
The trip hazard had been eliminated
The site was clear and safe for follow-up paving repairs
Noise and disruption had been kept to an absolute minimum thanks to careful timing and the use of electric equipment
The client was pleased with how smoothly the job went — and how professionally it was managed from start to finish.
