We were recently instructed to carry out a significant reduction on a mature Horse Chestnut tree in Didsbury, South Manchester. The tree was subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) due to its age, size, and prominence in the local area — forming part of the established character of the neighbourhood.
Our client had raised concerns about the tree’s increasing size, its close proximity to houses, and its spread across two neighbouring front gardens and a busy pedestrian route. The canopy had become too large for its setting, with several lower limbs affecting clearance and light levels in both gardens.
Planning and Permission
Because the tree was protected by a TPO, no work could take place without permission from the local planning authority. We handled the entire application process on behalf of the client.
After submitting a detailed proposal outlining the reasons for the work and the intended scope, permission was granted for the following:
Crown height reduction of up to 4 metres
Lateral branch reduction of up to 2 metres
Crown lift to improve clearance over the gardens and public pavement
Our application made the case for remedial work that would preserve the tree’s long-term health and amenity value, while reducing its dominance over surrounding properties and public space.

Site Constraints
The tree was located in the front gardens of two adjoining residential properties and extended over or near:
A heavily used pedestrian walkway in front of the houses
The rooflines, gutters and windows of both properties
Public safety and minimal disruption were priorities throughout the job. We managed this by:
Installing cones, signage, and barriers to safely manage pedestrian traffic
Using rigging systems and tag lines to carefully lower cut branches
Coordinating the work in both gardens to avoid damage to boundary features or planted areas
Carrying Out the Work
The reduction was completed by our team of experienced arborists. Work included:
Crown height reduction, with 3–4 metres of vertical growth removed from dominant leaders
Selective lateral pruning, targeting limbs overhanging properties and footpaths
A crown lift, removing lower branches to improve light and clearance
General crown cleaning, removing minor deadwood and crossing limbs
All cuts were made in line with BS3998:2010 (Tree Work – Recommendations), using best-practice pruning methods to encourage healthy regrowth and retain the tree’s natural form.
Outcome
The result was a healthier, more balanced Horse Chestnut that still contributes to the local landscape, but is now far better suited to its surroundings.
Key improvements included:
Increased daylight into both front gardens
Reduced pressure on buildings and boundaries
Improved pedestrian safety beneath the crown
A more manageable and maintainable tree for the future
The work was completed safely, cleanly, and with full compliance. The homeowners were pleased with the outcome, and we received positive feedback on both the results and the professionalism of the team.
